Hunter Simmons: Wisconsin's New Hope Against Ohio State (2025)

From Third String to the Starting Lineup: The Unexpected Rise of Hunter Simmons

It's a classic underdog story: a player begins the season buried on the depth chart, only to find themselves thrust into the spotlight. That's the situation for Hunter Simmons, Wisconsin's quarterback, who is unexpectedly slated to start against the formidable Ohio State Buckeyes.

Initially, Simmons was the third-string quarterback for the Badgers. He transferred from Southern Illinois during the offseason, finding himself behind both Billy Edwards Jr., a transfer from Maryland, and Danny O’Neil, who came from San Diego State, on the depth chart.

Edwards got the nod to start the season opener against Miami (OH). However, an unfortunate knee injury cut his game short, with a completion rate of only 7 out of 16 passes for 113 yards. O’Neil stepped in, leading the Badgers to a 17-10 victory, completing 12 of 19 passes for 120 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

For a moment, it seemed like O'Neil had the offense in control. He shined in a 42-10 victory over Middle Tennessee State, completing 23 of 27 passes for 283 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just one interception. But the team's momentum stalled in consecutive losses to Alabama and Maryland. O’Neil's performance dipped, completing only 25 of 39 passes for 237 yards, one touchdown, and 3 interceptions. Coach Fickell benched him in the second half against Maryland, turning to Simmons. Since then, Simmons has completed 33 of 59 passes for 329 yards, one touchdown, and 3 interceptions in games against Maryland, Michigan, and Iowa.

Coach Fickell put Simmons and O'Neil in a head-to-head battle for the starting quarterback position this week. According to reports, there's no set return date for Edwards.

And this is the part most people miss... With Simmons starting against Ohio State, Coach Fickell has only had his intended starting quarterback play and remain healthy in only 11 out of 31 games during his tenure as Wisconsin's head coach. Fickell, a former Buckeye defensive lineman and assistant coach, currently has a record of 15-17 as the Badgers' leader, with an 8-13 record in Big Ten competition.

But here's where it gets controversial... This situation raises questions about the team's consistency and the impact of injuries on their performance. What do you think? Is Simmons the right choice for the Badgers? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
